Mantra of the week: Stop SETTLING

I had my mantra of the week handed to me this morning by my very caring but blunt Ashtanga yoga teacher: “Stop SETTLING, you know what I mean… yeah?” My first reaction was “what the hell? REALLY?” I got up at 5am, made special attention to concentrate on just what was on my mat as people started to fill the mysore room (especially hard for me), and didn't skip utthita hasta padangusthasana (which sometimes I tend to do accidentally). And that’s when she called me out. Pointing out that when I can’t do something perfectly, I rush through it and move on to the next pose. As she continued to explain what she noticed in my practice and habits I've fallen into, my eyes because wet. Not because she was being hurtful. Because she was right! I knew EXACTLY what she meant.

So, I pass this mantra on to you, Stop SETTLING. This can take so many forms in one’s life. In your physical practice, maybe it means not skipping a pose or feeling defeated when it doesn't look perfect. Perhaps it means choosing that running route that has the crazy hill that you think is impossible. You can do it, one step at a time. Or in your personal life, maybe you need to stop avoiding an obstacle that feels overwhelming. Commit to it. Even if it causes some wobbling and discomfort for a time. Stick with it and see how you can grow from the experience. Become stronger with that sense of commitment.
